The first brush motor was invented by William Sturgeon in 1832, this ran on DC, there was some controversy over AC vs DC, then Nikola Tesla inventeed the first practical AC motor in 1888, this opened up the possibilities of using AC to power motors, and as we know, AC is easier to 'transport' over cable because it could be stepped up and down using transformers, this was known as an Induction motor.

You'll find brush motors in many appliances including vacuum cleaners, food mixers, electric drills etc, as well as many small items like model cars.
Induction motors can be found in desk fans, air conditioning, fridges/freezers etc

In industry you'll often find induction motors, some are single phase, but many are 3 phase, and going up to hundreds of amps.
